A Brief History of Aghamore GAA

The Aghamore GAA Club is presently doing some research on the history of the club. There is some evidence to suggest that football has been played in the area from early in the last century. As you will understand the happenings of the early years are sketchy with little or no documentation of events.

It becomes a little easier from the late fifties on when competition was more structured and accounts of events can be obtained from those who were involved and from newspaper reports. The sixties saw the emergence of a strong underage structure resulting in a number of successes at county level. This provided the platform for a very successful era at the higher levels in the late sixties and seventies.

There is a wonderful story to be told, as much about people and happenings off the pitch as events on the playing fields. Any good history will be a combination of both. The story of the Aghamore GAA Club is one of tremendous endeavour, commitment, pride and fulfilment with many moments of elation and joy but occasions also of disappointment and sadness.

The club would greatly welcome contributions from people involved down through the years; players, mentors, officers and supporters. Photographs would be most welcome and will enhance any publication. Articles from people who were involved, but who for one reason or another have left our shores, would be really appreciated.

Looking forward to a massive response.

Up Aghamore!
